Leica 10854 SL2 Body
The Leica 10854 SL2 mirrorless camera was developed by carefully listening to feedback from photographers who worked with its predecessor. With considerable effort, Leica has managed to deliver technological innovation and performance whilst preserving the brand's classic design and heritage. In addition to delivering high performance and unrivalled build quality, the Leica SL2 offers a joyful user experience thanks to improved ergonomics. The camera's grip has become more comfortable and the control layout has been significantly improved.
The Leica SL2's full-frame CMOS image sensor delivers unprecedented resolution at an unrivalled level of detail and image quality. This mirrorless camera offers excellent image quality in all lighting conditions, thanks to an enormous dynamic range, a colour depth of 14 bits per RGB channel, and sensitivity up to ISO 50,000. Even when used with Leica TL lenses, which are designed for the smaller sensor format of Leica, the SL2's sensor still delivers an excellent image resolution of more than 20 megapixels.
The Leica SL2 also features advanced in-body image stabilisation, which further extends the potential of legendary Leica M lenses. This feature also enhances the power of the growing selection of SL lenses, comprising the finest optics Leica has ever produced. The SL2 serves as a groundbreaking embrace of the future of digital photography and videography, whilst paying tribute to its respected history and heritage.
The SL2 is the first mirrorless camera to be designed and manufactured in Germany. The body features an unrivalled, fully metal solid construction and elegant leather wrap to stand the test of time. The durability of the SL2 is ensured by consistent firmware updates, giving you years of photographic enjoyment.
Streamlined design with new status menus
The Leica SL2 offers an innovative user interface with an efficient design that allows you to keep your focus on the creative process. The design alignment with the existing M and Q systems makes the transition even easier for existing Leica photographers. The key shooting parameters can be viewed on the rear display and quickly adjusted with a simple tap of a finger. A click wheel, a joystick, and three individually configurable buttons all contribute to straightforward operation. Thanks to two dedicated status menus for photos and video recordings, the parameters for both shooting modes can be adjusted completely independently of one another.
Improved ergonomics for stress-free shooting in every situation
Despite significant technical improvements and the inclusion of in-body image stabilisation, the Leica SL2 has retained the same dimensions as its predecessor and feels exceptionally comfortable. The improved body design combined with enhanced durability makes the SL2 the perfect companion for all forms of photography. The SL2's IP54 certification provides increased weather sealing for more demanding conditions, whilst a new option to disable noise reduction during long exposures allows for more hands-free shooting. Fewer concerns about weather and environmental conditions means you can concentrate more on capturing the shot. Overall, the SL2's design is more reminiscent of the iconic Leica identity and the traditional design DNA elements for which the brand has become known and loved.
New Leica Object Detection Autofocus
The new Leica Object Detection AF delivers fast and reliable AF. New modes and functions have also been added, including face recognition. The SL2's powerful AF system also automatically detects the movement of your subject, then switches between motion and focus priority accordingly.
Optical image stabilisation via sensor-shift technology
The Leica SL-series camera has undergone a significant evolution. From this came the new sensor that adjusts its position to compensate for camera shake quickly and efficiently. Thanks to this new feature, image stabilisation is now also available for lenses that are not equipped with it.
In addition, the SL2 offers a multishot mode in which up to eight consecutive frames are captured. In this mode, the sensor is shifted in half-pixel increments between each shot. This feature results in images with an incredible fourfold resolution of approximately 187 megapixels, leading to an extreme increase in detail resolution.
Leica EyeRes® viewfinder with even higher resolution
The camera's electronic viewfinder (EVF) features a resolution of 5.76 megapixels for a large, completely natural-looking viewfinder image. At the same time, the experience has been further improved with the touchscreen, which has increased to 3.2 inches and a considerably higher resolution of 2.1 megapixels.
Maestro III processor for ultra-fast operation
The new Maestro III processor delivers superior operating speed that excels in performance across the many aspects of the SL2. Autofocus is significantly faster, enabling virtually lag-free shooting. This is further complemented by the new Smart AF mode, which autonomously switches between focus priority and shutter priority. Full-resolution burst shooting of consecutive images is possible at 10fps with the mechanical shutter, and up to 20 frames per second with the electronic shutter! Thanks to two UHS-II-compatible SD card slots, RAW files can be saved simultaneously in DNG and JPEG format.
The perfect tool for cinematographers
In addition to its great appeal for photographers, the Leica SL2 also speaks the language of cinematographers. The camera enables video recording up to 60fps in Cine 4K and up to 180fps in Full HD. Once the cine mode is activated, the SL2 transforms into a manually operated cinema camera. In cine mode, ISO values are displayed in ASA and shutter speed is marked in degrees on the rotating shutter disc. Aperture values are also indicated in T-stops rather than F-stops, measuring the actual amount of light transmitted through the lens. It is also no longer necessary to use adapters for connecting audio equipment, as the Leica SL2 features a built-in headphone and microphone socket, complemented by a full-size HDMI port for external monitors.
