The Sony FE 100mm f/2.8 STF GM OSS is a 100mm short telephoto lens specially designed to create stunning, out-of-focus backgrounds where the subject appears to stand out from the background. The lens is made for full-frame Sony NEX mirrorless cameras, but can also be used with APS-C models where it offers a focal length equivalent of 150mm. In addition to a unique optical design, this prime lens distinguishes itself through Smooth Trans Focus (STF) technology, which uses an apodisation filter to create a visibly softer, rounder bokeh. A rounded 11-blade aperture further contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality when using shallow depth of field techniques. The dust- and splash-resistant design allows you to work in adverse conditions, and the rubber-coated rings ensure you maintain control over the lens operation even in colder temperatures.

The lens features one aspherical element and an extra-low dispersion element to reduce both spherical and chromatic aberration. In addition, this telephoto lens is also equipped with Nano AR coating to reduce lens flare and ghosting for greater contrast and reliable colour rendering when working in strong lighting conditions. Furthermore, the built-in optical SteadyShot image stabilisation minimises blur that can occur when shooting in low-light conditions or at long exposures.

A customisable focus hold button on the lens can be used to maintain the focus position, or can be configured in the camera to control various additional lens functions. With the ring switch, you can choose between a focus range of 7.11cm to infinity or a shorter distance of 4.83–8.38cm, which also offers 0.25x magnification for close-up details. The Sony FE 100mm f/2.8 STF GM OSS also features a Direct Drive SSM mechanism (DDSSM) for smooth and silent autofocus and close-up shooting to a magnification of 0.25x. The manual aperture ring can be used steplessly, for example during filming, for a smooth and quiet transition.
