Using computer simulations, the lens was designed to render a beautiful blurred background. Because the front lens group does not rotate during focusing, special filter effects are not affected.
The EF 85mm f/1.8 USM produces images that are sharp and clear at all apertures. A nearly circular aperture gives out-of-focus areas a softer, more even feel and makes sharp subjects stand out against a blurred background. The lens has a non-rotating front element during focusing, which makes it possible to use special filters (such as polarising filters and graduated filters). Thanks to the large maximum aperture of f/1.8, you can shoot handheld in difficult, low-light conditions and limit the depth of field for creative effects. The short telephoto focal length of the lens compresses perspective slightly, which makes prominent facial features appear smaller for a flattering result.
A ring-type ultrasonic motor drives the autofocus extremely fast and almost silently. The excellent holding torque ensures that the focus point is reached accurately, without overshooting. Fully manual control is also available, so you can adjust the focus without leaving AF mode. Super Spectra coatings provide accurate colour balance and improve contrast. They also reduce flare and ghosting, a common problem caused by light reflecting off a camera's sensor. The lens also passes distance information to the E-TTL II flash system of a compatible EOS camera to ensure optimal flash metering.
